Set up audition appointments.

Well, I've done it! I've started a new blog! NO! That doesn't mean I'm leaving LJ. LJ is for my personal stuff, updates and stuff like that. (That it appears not many people read anyway, but that's okay.) This new blog is about, what else, musical theatre...

It's to look at one show at a time and the strengths and shortcomings of several recordings of it. Sound boring? Sound exciting? Either way, here's the url:

http://castbycast.blogspot.com

Yeah. It might flop bigly. Or I might just enjoy it. I just wrote up A Chorus Line for my first entry, and it took longer than I thought. And more thought than I thought. The most time-consuming part is listening to each recording all the way through before writing them up. God knows how I hate listening to musicals.

There it is, feel free to disagree with anything I say, or just ignore it. Whatevsies.

Apr. 8th, 2009 @ 12:24 pm Turnabout is fair democracy?
A little bit of Jon Stewart's seeds of rationality. After hearing someone blame our new President for his child's west coast elementary school re-naming "St. Patrick's Day" to "Potato Day" (a whole other argument of offensiveness aside...), and in the face of criticism leveled calling President Obama's new policy decisions "the road to tyranny", Jon had this to say:

"So, government's taking over our schools, our corporations, our healthcare, our personal liberties -- scary! And, while President Bush was the one who started the bailouts, nationalized an insurance company, added a 17 trillion dollar prescription drug entitlement program, had a government-mandated public school initiative literally titled "No Child Left Behind", wiretapped citizens without warrants, created secret internment camps in international waters behind the reach of our justice system, and allowed his vice-president to live in a netherworld between the executive and legislative branch where his house did not exist on Google Earth, only now with the advent of 'Potato Day' has tyranny come to our shores. Yeah..."

Here's the clip. )

I swear I'll update properly soon... but... Neflix just said:

Based on my interest in "Shenandoah" (starring Jimmy Stewart in a Civil War epic), and "Wallis & Edward" (British abdication drama), they recommend..... "Let the Right One In".

What is their algorithm?

According to CNN.com, six people were injured in a skirmish that erupted at a NYC audition for "America's Next Top Model" on Saturday.

Also Saturday, reactionary riots broke out in Northern Ireland after suspects were arrested for the recent slaying of British soldiers. No injuries were reported.

What?

Appropriate for tonight's award presentation, here's a slip I found in my box of bills and bank statements:

Billy Bob Thornton: Getting the Oscar nomination is like gravy.

Interviewer: What about winning?

Thornton: Winning would be like whatever is better than gravy.

(I'm not actually watching the show tonight. I'm saving up my awards show tolerance for the Tony Awards in June.)

Jan. 31st, 2009 @ 02:29 am Mr. Updike
Some of you may have heard that John Updike passed away this week. A fine writer, who wrote a little something that in the wilderness of the interwebs I'm going to copy/paste here:

It came to me the other day:
Were I to die, no one would say,
“Oh, what a shame! So young, so full
Of promise — depths unplumbable!”

Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes
Will greet my overdue demise;
The wide response will be, I know,
“I thought he died a while ago.”

For life’s a shabby subterfuge,
And death is real, and dark, and huge.
The shock of it will register
Nowhere but where it will occur.

The first seven (7) people to respond to this post will get something made by me.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:

- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year (2009).
- No requests-- it could be anything. It may be a mix CD. It may be a poem.
I may draw or paint something.
I might bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows?
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch is that if you don't re-post this offer, the bargain is void!

Every week I read my horoscope from Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny. I find that they're less about "the stars are aligned to make you do this" and more little paragraphs of things you can think about. Like a capsulated counselor or such. Here is what mine said tonight:

"If you removed all of the homosexuals and homosexual influence from what is generally regarded as American culture," said author Fran Lebowitz, "you would pretty much be left with [the TV game show] 'Let's Make A Deal.'" That's an exaggeration, of course, but it contains a large grain of truth. I offer this as a prod for you to deepen your understanding of the complexities of gender, Virgo. Astrologically speaking, it's an excellent time to do so. If you identify yourself as a heterosexual, meditate on the qualities you express that are commonly thought of as the specialty of the opposite sex. Consider the possibility that you are actually 65 percent female, 25 percent male, and 10 percent neither, or maybe 15 percent female, 70 percent male, and 15 percent transgender. If you regard yourself as gay, explore the hypothesis that a part of you is secretly kind of straight. Open your mind to the possibility that human beings come in hundreds of different genders.

I woke up this morning, to the relief that this is still happening. Pardon me while I exhale the tension brought by the former administration during my entire post-collegiate life (so far), and inhale a new ethic.

And speaking of, I've got to get to work myself. Today I am taking public transportation everywhere -- Because I Can! Bus downtown for rehearsal. Monorail to second rehearsal. Bus back home 12 total hours later. Cheaper than parking. Cheaper than driving. Better for the environment than both. Unless I miss that first bus. Gotta go!

Jan. 19th, 2009 @ 12:14 am One of the secrets
Tonight I had a revelation. About life. (Caution: Philosophical thoughts ahead. Skip down for the just the news.) One of the secrets of life that we can take from nature, but can so easily go by the wayside is the energy of renewal. This evening I had a conversation with a friend discussing my former roommates and the general stagnancy of the energy in the house vs. my new roommate and the continual cycle of motion.

The earth is in a constant cycle of renewal. Nothing stays the same. Ever. Tomorrow should not be the same as today. Today should not be the same as yesterday. Trying to make it so, or keep it so is a futile effort that goes against nature itself. But so often people without a certain "get-up-and-go", "fire-under-the-ass" motivation can slip so easily into ruts and habits. Habits that stagnate their lives and prevent them from renewing. Which sinks them even further into the muck of inaction. Yikes.

I wish all of you readers a steady flow of the energy of renewal.

And now the news: )

Sometimes international politics can look so much more understandable through the lens of the school yard.

I was telling a friend a week or two ago that Hamas was sort of like the class bully. He said, no, Israel is the class bully. The kid who has parental issues, and is just sullen enough that no one really likes. And if you accidentally step on his toe in the hall, he cries "foul" and beats the daylights out of you.

What does that make Hamas then, I asked?

Hamas is the quiet intense kid who looks pretty normal, but is just eccentric enough that no one talks to him. He generally keeps to himself, but if you cross him, puts a horse head on your porch. Or kills your pet.

I could see how his condensation of the psychology made sense. Even today with Israel's cease fire followed by a "Don't try us" statement. Essentially saying, we'll stop punching you and let you stand up for a second, but you'd better not look at us funny again.

And in the end, they're both in a volatile position of hyper-reaction to things that really ought to be better talked out. I guess the world needs more counselors and less triggers.

Well, my entire spring schedule has just changed. I will now be killing myself softly with my song through the end of March, rehearsing/touring all day, rehearsing/performing all night. Good times. More details later. Shaky contract negotiation process, but it all worked out for the best so far.

I got a fortune cookie the other day that said "Next month will be your most profitable all year." I think it's right.
